As psychiatric mental health practitioners and researchers we are all well aware of
the complex nature of resilience. We can identify when our patients are resilient,
and we teach them strategies to enhance their resilience. Yet we also know that resilience
is a complex phenomenon (

Fitzpatrick, 2009

Gillespie et al., 2007
). What makes some people resilient when confronted with trauma or an extremely stressful
event?
Southwick and Charney, 2012
provide many excellent examples of how we can practice resilience on an individual,
group (family and work group), and community level. Each of their suggestions are
based on years of research, their own and that of others. What do we know from the
